The current implementation of the `fdManager` class uses the `select()` system call to monitor file descriptors. This imposes a hard limit of `FD_SETSIZE` (typically 1024) on the number of file descriptors that can be monitored simultaneously. For applications such as the CA gateway, this limit is too restrictive.
