In older C++ standards (pre-C++11), the `std::fstream` classes (`ifstream`, `ofstream`, `fstream`) only accepted C-style strings (`const char*`) in their constructors and `open()` methods, not `std::string` objects. This required programmers to use `.c_str()` to convert `std::string` to `const char*`.
