The task
In local development environments, it's common to want all requests for a wildcard domain pattern (e.g., `*.local`) to resolve to `localhost` (127.0.0.1). The standard `/etc/hosts` file does not support wildcard entries. On Linux, `dnsmasq` is a lightweight DNS forwarder that can handle wildcard domain resolution.
